E-PROPS : Blade pitch adjustment


The ground adjustable pitch E-Props have a strong ESR effect. Their behavior is similar to that of an inflight variable pitch propeller: high efficiency of the engine-propeller combination over the whole speed range of your aircraft.

⇒ To obtain this ESR effect, the adjustment of the blade pitch must be subtle and precise

IMPORTANT: The measurement of the ideal engine rpm is done in flight and not on the ground.
For ground adjustable pitch E-Props models, which have a strong ESR effect, static rpm measurement is not a significant data, because they are designed to reach their full traction or thrust just after the start of the take-off roll, not in static. In static, the blades of the E-Props are slightly stalled.

The adjustment of the blade pitch depends on the type of engine of the aircraft.

1 - How to adjust blades pitch of E-Props propellers

The digital protractor must remain switched ON while measuring the pitch of all blades.
If it swiches OFF, you will have to repeat the measurement for each blade, otherwise you won't be able to get the value of the gap between the blades (which must be max 0.3°).
A trick for keeping the protractor switched ON : put it in your pocket between measures. That way, as it continues to move, it won't switch OFF. 🙂


2 - E-Props adjustment on Rotax 4 stroke series 9 engines

On Rotax 9xx series 4-stroke engines (912, 912S, 912iS, 914, 915iS), the pitch at which the E-PROPS propeller will give the best performance over the whole speed range of the aircraft is obtained :
5,500 rpm at full throttle level flight

PROCEDURE:
1/  Adjust the pitch as recommended on the Propeller Identification Sheet (sent with the propeller), or on the
description of the propeller on our catalog See the right article: aircraft + engine + gearbox + propeller.
Example on our catalog: 3-blade Durandal 175 cm DUR-3-175-C4-T
for ICP Savannah Rotax 912S reducer 2.43.
First recommended pitch = 25°

The recommended pitch is merely an indication, not an obligation. A different pitch measurement, engine condition, etc., can change this value.

2/ On the ground, put full power on brakes or chocks.
✗  If you have between 5.000 and 5.800 rpm, you can go on with the flight tests.
✗  If this is not the case, adjust the blade pitch to have between 5.000 and 5.800 rpm on the ground.
Increasing the pitch by 0,6° reduces the rotation speed by 100 rpm.
Decreasing the pitch by 0,6° increases the rotation speed by 100 rpm.

3/ In flight, level off at a cruising altitude (below 10,000 ft - 3,000 ft is fine).
✗  Apply full throttle.
✗  Note the number of rpm that appears on your tachometer.
✗  If you have 5500 rpm (+/- 50 rpm), your setting is perfect.
✗  If not, land and redo the setting.

Example: in full throttle, the engine is running at 5,700 rpm, while the target is 5,500 rpm. The difference is 2 x 100 rpm, so the pitch must be increased by 2 x 0.6° = 1.2°.
If you get this value of 5,500 rpm full throttle, then your propeller is optimally set for the full speed range of your aircraft.
Of course, this does not mean that you always have to fly cruising at 5.500 rpm: this is only the right value to have the best pitch.


E-PROPS


3 - E-Props adjustment on Rotax 2 stroke 582 engines

On Rotax series 2-stroke engines (532,582), the pitch at which the E-PROPS propeller will give the best performance over the whole speed range of the aircraft is obtained :
6,800 rpm at full throttle level flight

PROCEDURE:
1/  Adjust the pitch as recommended on the Propeller Identification Sheet (sent with the propeller), or on the
description of the propeller on our catalog See the right article: aircraft + engine + gearbox + propeller.
Example on our catalog: 3-blade Durandal 175 cm DUR-3-175-C4-T
for ICP Savannah Rotax 912S reducer 2.43.
First recommended pitch = 25°

✗  If this is not the case, adjust the blade pitch to have between 6.000 and 6.800 rpm on the ground.
Increasing the pitch by 0,5° to 0.9° (depending on the gearbox ratio) reduces the rotation speed by 100 rpm.
Decreasing the pitch by 0,5° to 0.9° (depending on the gearbox ratio)increases the rotation speed by 100 rpm.

3/ In flight, level off at a cruising altitude (below 10,000 ft - 3,000 ft is fine).
✗  Apply full throttle.
✗  Note the number of rpm that appears on your tachometer.
✗  If you have 6800 rpm (+/- 50 rpm), your setting is perfect.
✗  If not, land and redo the setting.

Example: in full throttle, the engine is running at 6,600 rpm, while the target is 6,800 rpm. The difference is 2 x 100 rpm, so the pitch must be decreased by 2 x 0.7° = 1.4°.
If you get this value of 6,800 rpm full throttle, then your propeller is optimally set for the full speed range of your aircraft.
Of course, this does not mean that you always have to fly cruising at 6.800 rpm: this is only the right value to have the best pitch.

Please note: if you have inconsistent values compared to the values given by E-Props, check if you have the right gearbox.
It is common for 582 engine gearbox casing to show a reduction ratio but the gears inside the casing are the wrong ones.
Also check your tachometer if it is a needle-type (often poorly calibrated).
